The Beatles' First UK No. 1

This depends on who you ask, but She Loves You is almost certainly not the right answer.

According to the Guinness Book of UK Hit Singles, the Beatles' first UK No. 1 was From Me to You; She Loves You was their second. The Official Charts website agrees (not surprisingly, since they use the same chart – the one compiled by the trade publication Record Retailer.)

According to Wikipedia however, Please Please Me (which peaked at No. 2, according to the Guinness book) "reached number one on every chart in London except Record Retailer, where it peaked at number two".

In case anyone needs reminding, Please Please Me was the Beatles' second single, after Love Me Do; From Me To You was their third, and She Loves You their fourth (unless you count My Bonnie, which was credited to Tony Sheridan and the Beatles).

JPGR.co.uk ("the Complete U.K. Discography of John, Paul, George and Ringo") comments:

"The choice of [the Record Retailer chart] as the one used for 'official' purposes is slightly unfortunate, because in just about EVERY other national chart Please Please Me was number 1 (and therefore the Beatles FIRST number one).

"Consequently, there will always be much debate as to which record was actually The Beatles first number one, and quiz compilers and the like should avoid asking this question because of the ambiguity of the answer!"

Quite where this particular quiz compiler got the idea that She Loves You was the Beatles' first No. 1 remains a mystery. Having said that, it was probably the same place as the person who was asked this question in our quiz, who answered "She Loves You" and was (quite rightly) awarded the points!

A possible source of confusion is the fact that She Loves You was the Beatles' biggest-selling single in the UK, and the UK's biggest-selling single by any group or artist in the 1960s
